Flex means to show off, to display wealth, status, skill, or achievement. Borrowed from bodybuilding, where flexing muscles is literal performance of strength. The internet took it and made it universal. You can flex a car, a promotion, a perfectly plated meal, a vocabulary. Soft flex is the subtle, almost accidental version. Hard flex is unapologetic.

People love it because it removes the shame from showing off. Older generations danced around self-promotion. Flex just owns it. One syllable that gave bragging a rebrand. Worth documenting because it marks a cultural shift where visibility became a value rather than a vice.
