CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF _

CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF _  is the air traffic control phrase that authorizes an aircraft to enter the runway and begin its takeoff roll. Takeoff is tightly controlled phraseology, used only for this specific clearance in order to avoid dangerous ambiguity. Until those words are issued and read back, the aircraft remains on the ground. The phrase marks the final legal and procedural threshold before flight begins.

From an aviation perspective, the term is compelling because it condenses an enormous amount of preparation into a single moment of release. Flight planning, fueling, sequencing, taxi instructions, and runway separation all culminate here. It is the instant when an aircraft stops being a vehicle in waiting and becomes a machine entering its true element. In the context of the series, it also has a precise relationship to CLEARED FOR IMMEDIATE DEPARTURE: departure and takeoff are not the same event. One concerns timing and readiness, the other grants the actual right to launch.

Art historically, the work is interesting because it turns a procedural command into an image of suspended potential. The trailing underscore is crucial. It introduces a pause after the clearance, as though the phrase were still live, still awaiting execution. Set within the scale of a jet window and against a sky, the text occupies a threshold between stillness and motion, earth and atmosphere, instruction and action. The window becomes both aperture and picture plane.
